Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Environmental Science

Description
The Department of Environmental Studies at the College of the Holy Cross invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in environmental science to begin in August 2026. We seek an interdisciplinary environmental scientist with expertise in spatial data analysis and GIS methods in their teaching and scholarship. The department member we hire will teach two of our core courses: ENVS 117 Environmental Science and ENVS 247 Introduction to GIS, as well as upper-level courses in their area(s) of interest. Ideal areas of expertise include spatial analysis in environmental change or the physical, chemical, and/or biological aspects of environmental systems, and the ideal candidate will involve undergraduate students in their scholarly agenda. At this time we are in the process of modernizing our science facilities. Laboratory space (especially wet lab space) is currently extremely limited but may be available in the future. Due to this limitation, preference may be given to candidates without extensive laboratory needs.

The Environmental Studies Department at Holy Cross is a robustly interdisciplinary department of scientists, social scientists, and humanists. Our new hire has the opportunity to help shape our department and its future. Successful candidates will be those whose research and teaching can help us demonstrate cogent intersections between environmental science, policy, communication, and, especially, environmental justice within a particular region or at the national or global level. We welcome applications from candidates who demonstrate commitment to public-facing research and teaching and/or innovative practice, can contribute to other curricular programs and initiatives at the College, and who complement our existing expertise in climate justice, geohumanities, geomorphology/hydrology, and marine science. We are also interested in scholars who are committed to community-based forms of science, the remediation of urban nature, and dedicated to reducing environmental inequalities.

This position carries a 3-2 teaching load with a research leave prior to tenure review of either a full year at 80% salary or a semester at full salary, and generous sabbatical and fellowship leaves for tenured faculty. To enable a smooth transition to Holy Cross, new full-time tenure-track Assistant Professors receive start-up funding to support their research and professional development and have a one-course reduction in their first year of teaching (i.e., 2-2). This position offers full benefits and a starting salary in the range of $101,850 to $103,850. Faculty at the College cultivate a richly diverse academic community, pursue innovative teaching, and create high-impact scholarship. To learn more about faculty life at the College and in the Worcester area, candidates are encouraged to see the Resources for Prospective Faculty on our Faculty Openings page.

Qualifications
Candidates must demonstrate excellence in scholarship and undergraduate teaching as well as a commitment to inclusive pedagogies. A Ph.D. in environmental science, physical or environmental (not human) geography, an interdisciplinary environmental program that has strong science foundations, ecology, global change biology, natural resource management, earth science, or a related field is required by the beginning of the appointment.
