This position is in the Laboratory Technician Series and is a critical need to meet compliance requirements related to plant treatment operations and source water monitoring. The incumbent in this position supports Valley Water functions with field sampling and laboratory processes. Laboratory Technicians perform a variety of routine laboratory procedures including: field sampling; receiving and logging in samples into laboratory information management system; preparing laboratory media, reagents, and solutions; assembling sample collection kits, taking inventory of and assisting with ordering laboratory supplies; maintaining basic laboratory equipment; performing standardized bacteriological and general chemistry testing; assisting microbiologists and chemist with application of quality control standards, sterilizing laboratory equipment; and communicating with other Valley Water personnel as needed. The ideal candidate will have some understanding of drinking water regulations, sample collection and monitoring requirements, and will be able to adapt to specific EPA and/or Standard Methods for the purpose of State accreditation.
Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Collect water samples from treatment plant processes, treated water turnouts, reservoirs, and other specified locations on a routine basis; make non-routine sample collections as requested; conduct routine field tests on samples and/or prepare samples for storage and transportation. Make field observations at sample collection points; record data and maintain accurate field notes.
  • Perform technical duties in support of laboratory operations and activities including glassware maintenance, prepare standard chemical solutions, reagents, stains, and bacteriological media for use in testing water quality; ensure adequate supply of standard media solutions.
  • Assist chemists and other laboratory staff with specialized research projects, and in maintaining an inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Work with section seniors with shipping and receiving of items and stocking items in lab storage area.
  • Adhere to safe work practices; maintain safety procedures and store records; ensure proper disposal of hazardous waste and chemicals. Perform minor maintenance and repair on a variety of laboratory equipment and instruments; maintain laboratory in a safe and clean condition.

Ideal Experience:
Laboratory Technician I
Two (2) years of chemical, biological, or bacteriological laboratory experience OR twelve (12) semester units of college level course work in physical, natural, or earth sciences may substitute for two (2) years of experience.

Laboratory Technician II
Four (4) years of chemical, biological, or bacteriological laboratory experience OR twelve (12) semester units of college level course work in physical, natural, or earth sciences may substitute for two (2) years of experience.

Ideal Skills and Abilities:
Laboratory Technician I
  • Learn methods and techniques of water sampling and analysis.
  • Learn to collect water samples from a variety of specified locations.
  • Learn to perform standard physical, chemical, biological, and bacteriological tests on water and related materials.
  • Learn to prepare standard chemical solutions, reagent, stains, and media.
  • Dispose of hazardous waste and chemicals according to established rules and regulations.
  • Set up, use, and maintain a variety of laboratory equipment.
  • Provide responsible assistance in specialized research projects.
  • Maintain detailed notes and records of work performed.
  • Learn to prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Operate a wide range of vehicles including trucks, vans, and boats.
Laboratory Technician II
In addition to the qualifications for Laboratory Technician I:
  • Collect water samples from a variety of specified locations.
  • Perform standard physical, chemical, biological, and bacteriological tests on water and related materials.
  • Prepare standard chemical solutions, reagent, stains, and media.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Operate a wide range of vehicles including trucks, vans, and boats.
Ideal Knowledge:
Laboratory Technician I
Some Knowledge of:
  • Methods and techniques of preparing standard media solutions.
  • Principles of chemistry and bacteriology as applied to the analysis of water.
  • Standard laboratory terminology and procedures.
  • Use and care of standard laboratory equipment, instruments, and materials.
  • Mathematical principles.
  • Principles and procedures of recordkeeping.
  • Principles of business writing and report preparation.
Laboratory Technician II
In addition to the qualifications for Laboratory Technician I:
Working Knowledge of:
  • Methods and techniques of preparing standard media solutions.
  • Principles of chemistry and bacteriology as applied to the analysis of water.
  • Standard laboratory terminology and procedures.
  • Use and care of standard laboratory equipment, instruments, and materials.
  • Methods and techniques of water sampling and analysis.
Ideal Training and Education:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Required License or Certificate

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license.
