Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Research Assistant - Biology position. The Research Assistant- Biology is a full-time, one-year term position, starting at $20.16 per hour. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

This is a research assistant position in Biology, where the primary responsibilities involve assisting with studies in the laboratory and greenhouse. The particular research project involves a fungal disease of plants, which provides a safe study model or advances questions in the ecology of infectious disease. The research has been funded by the NIH - Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Disease Program, through the National Institutes of General Medical Sciences and to the Fogarty Center. The main activities include growth plants and fungi in the context of large experiments, with additional efforts in documentation, data collection, and data analysis.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Research
  • Establish experimental studies and materials
  • Collecting data
  • Initial summary statistical analyses
  • Literature and database search for comparable results of other studies


Working with PI Hood using lab and greenhouse techniques
  • Maintenance, storage, and inventory of lab biological collections
  • Preparation of culture media or plant growth substrates
  • Deconstruct experimental materials


Lab management and activity documentation

Qualifications:

Required
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology
  • Experience with experimental studies in plant-fungal interaction
  • Attention to details
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Punctuality and time management skills
  • Organizational skills
  • Analysis and problem-solving skills
  • Skill at troubleshooting laboratory techniques
  • Commitment to working with a diverse community


Preferred
  • Concentration in Ecology or Evolutionary Biology
