Research Specialist

General summary/purpose:

The Laboratory of Genetic Neurobiology, part of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, focuses on investigating pathogenic pathways and finding novel therapeutic targets for genetic neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric diseases, including Huntington's disease and related disorders, spinocerebellar degenerative disorders, and schizophrenia. We make extensive use of cell and animal models, and employ a variety of molecular and biochemical techniques.

Our laboratory is seeking qualified candidates at all experience levels, including those with a bachelor's degree and undergraduate research laboratory work experience. This Research Specialist opportunity requires 1 year of experience, but all applicants will be considered and may be invited to apply to other opportunities that align with their experience.

Specific duties & responsibilities:
  • Manage mouse colonies, including routine care, breeding, injections, behavioral testing, and tissue harvesting and preparation.
  • Cell culture, including the growth and differentiation of stem cells (iPSCs).
  • Perform molecular and biochemical assays on cells and rodent and human tissues. Tasks will include cell transfection, PCR, quantitative PCR, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization, and molecular cloning.
  • Responsible for daily lab operations, including ordering and managing laboratory supplies, compliance with regulatory requirements, care and maintenance of laboratory equipment, and coordinating among laboratory research projects within and outside of our laboratory group.
  • Develop and implement new assays.
  • Supervise and train students, provide technical advice and assistance to other laboratory members.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.


Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

* Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field

* 1 year of laboratory experience performing relevant technique.

* Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience.

Preferred qualifications:
  • 2 years of research laboratory experience with cell culture, rodent colony management, and molecular and biochemical techniques.
  • Experience with stem cell maintenance and differentiation, experience with rodent colony management software, advanced cloning techniques, and working with students.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
