Sr Energy Engineer

Job Summary

The Sustainability & Energy team's primary responsibility is to meter all utilities on campus, including monthly billing and troubleshooting utility usage. This position supports reducing utility usage on campus to meet the Climate Action Plan goals (climate.utah.edu) and reduce operational costs at the University through existing operations and design in new construction projects. This position supports maintaining meter accuracy on-campus; provides engineering input to construction projects; drives department-funded projects to reduce utility usage on campus; and serves as the engineering liaison between University partners and construction teams.
The primary intent of this role is to expand the team's technical support for mechanical systems, including project planning and owner representation during project construction. For data, the team uses SkySpark, EnergyCAP, and building automation and controls software such as Metasys and Niagara.

Responsibilities
Provide support to utility metering operations on campus (Sustainability & Energy team's primary responsibility) and assist in on-site problem-solving with repairing meters; updating meter hierarchies; and coordinating with customers to identify causes of abnormal meter readings.
  • Serve as subject matter expert for metering and mechanical systems to troubleshoot issues for on-campus partners.


Provide technical guidance for new projects during design, construction, & commissioning. Understand code requirements and strategies that are above and beyond code (i.e. LEED, Green Globes, ASHRAE Guideline 36).

  • Commissioning support includes site visits, project meetings, and providing appropriate feedback from and to building occupants, project managers, engineers/architects, contractors, and Operations.
  • Communicate technical issues and concerns to individuals of varying technical backgrounds; follow-through to ensure a mutually agreed upon solution is met.
  • Serve as Owner's engineering representation.
Review design packages (e.g. BlueBeam sets) and provide technical expertise on mechanical systems.
  • Provide analysis & recommendations for new mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Comments to address Sustainability & Energy metering requirements and mechanical systems in alignment with Utah's DFCM Design Requirements and the University of Utah's additional design requirements.
  • Provide suggestions to Design Requirement updates based on frequent observations.
Evaluate operation of existing systems & equipment. Summarize and communicate the impact and significance of findings with varying backgrounds and technical levels of education.

The primary role of this position is to plan and implement specific pilots and portfolio-wide projects from a library of prioritized opportunities that support the University's commitment to carbon neutrality and other high-impact sustainability goals. Project plans will cover a broad set of topics (ex: HVAC, controls, lighting, water, transportation, waste, grounds, etc.) and will require extensive research, collaboration, documentation, and operational strategy development.This role will also support other engineering efforts including the evaluation of infrastructure technology changes and operational policy development.

This pivotal role will make a large impact by directly reducing the University's carbon footprint, conserving water, and improving local air quality.Expertise in mechanical equipment and systems. Familiarity with electrical and controls systems (e.g. ability to interpret electrical one-line diagrams).Fundamental understanding of control systems.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline or a related field, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); six years experience in scientific research or engineering development; demonstrated communication skills; and a commitment to provide excellent customer service required. Experience should include project or organizational management. Preference is given for an advanced degree in a scientific or engineering field and for publication of original research or project development in peer reviewed scientific journals, recognized professional society or engineering journals.

Preferences
Documented experience with the following:

  • Advanced degrees and professional credentials related to sustainability and energy management. Mechanical engineering degree(s) preferred.
  • Design, construction, operation & maintenance, and commissioning major and diverse types of infrastructure systems
  • Familiarity with building automation systems and operations, such as Metasys and Niagara.
  • SkySpark, including monitoring-based commissioning applications.
  • Demonstrated communication skills (listening, empathy), commitment to customer service, and political sensitivity
  • Life-Cycle Cost Analysis, Net Present Value, and Measurement and Verification (M&V) calculations
  • Scoping and planning large-scale, highly-technical projects
  • Systems thinking, creativity, and solutions-focus
  • Data-driven analysis and decision-making
  • Managing consultant/contractors and large, transdisciplinary teams
  • Track record keeping implementation of projects on time, in scope, and within budget while successfully delivering project goals
  • Knowledge of University of Utah operations, including related codes/standards, guidelines, and state/University requirements
  • Developing and maintaining standards and procedures
  • Working with or in quality-controlled environments such as hospitals and laboratory facilities.
  • Community engagement
