Position Description:
The Assistant Development Engineer functions as part of the Experimental Space Physics group in the Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences. The incumbent will assist in the design and development of spacecraft hardware and innovative instrumentation for space missions and ground-based platforms, specifically particle detectors and magnetometers for upcoming CubeSat missions. A strong mechanical design and machining background is required; must be able to manage system resource budgets (mainly masses, power, thermal, and data/comm), run simulations, and prepare documentation for the hardware to be flown in space.

Under the supervision of the Principal Development Engineer and instrument engineers, the incumbent will develop requirements for the spacecraft and instrument payloads, as well as assist with research and writing for novel sensor/mission funding proposals and related technical publications. During instrument assembly and testing, assist in verifying the requirements, write non-conformance reports and verify their closure. Where applicable, participate in future spacecraft integration and support of on-orbit missions. Must demonstrate professionalism and competence in a small team environment, exhibiting versatility, independence, follow-through, team-spirit and willingness to diversify quickly.
