Position Summary:
NJIT is in the middle of an exciting Digital Transformation journey. To support this transformation, the Information Services and Technology (IST) division is looking for an Associate Director of High Performance Research Computing to help support the university's growing research computing needs.

The Associate Director of High Performance Research Computing will build, hire and supervise a team of Research Computing Facilitators (RCF) including full time staff and student workers. The individual will lead the team to develop and provide research computing support and services to faculty and researchers leveraging the university's advanced computing research infrastructure and related resources.

The individual will be responsible for collaborating with faculty and student researchers across campus to understand and support their needs by developing and configuring software solutions that enable research projects. The individual will work with peers in the Information Services and Technology team to develop solutions to meet the researcher's needs. The individual will provide ongoing consulting and training sessions promoting the best way to use the infrastructure and related software.
The right candidate will be self motivated, keep up with trends and emerging technologies in the field, and provide forward thinking ideas to the research community as applicable. As a key member of the university's advanced research computing team, this individual will collaborate with academic and technical colleagues to develop proposals and assist with securing external grants.

A researcher at heart, this individual will strengthen collaboration across the Information Services and Technology division, with the research community, campus partners, with vendors, and with national and global entities to facilitate shared opportunities. All duties will need to be performed in accordance with university policies, procedures and core values.

Essential Functions:
Management (35%)
- Provide guidance, management, and supervision to a team of 2-3 Research Computing Facilitators or similar roles.
- Establish operational objectives and priorities for delivery of research computing support and services.
- Establish success metrics for research computing services and support.
- Promote awareness of research computing services to NJIT researchers and the NJIT research community.
- Foster and facilitate interdisciplinary computational research activities.
- Monitor HPC computing user environments and work with HPC Systems team to identify and resolve system problems.
- Coordinate the acquisition, installation, and maintenance of research computing software and hardware.

Research Support (35%)
- Lead the facilitation and education efforts by providing consulting, programming and other services to faculty and researchers in using HPC clusters and other research computing resources and by providing advanced consulting to identify, investigate and resolve problems encountered.
- Provide in-depth consultation with researchers through regular engagements on how to use the HPC cluster for their research projects through both one-on-one consultations and training sessions, including assistance with scripting, programming, and debugging services, workflow management, software installation and data management.
- Develop next-generation workflows or debug complex issues by having a deep understanding of future technology, software and tools.
- Assist with proposal development. Work with NJIT Library staff to provide research data management services to NJIT Faculty.

Training & Outreach (20%)
- Organize, develop and teach workshops, course modules, seminars and training session in basic use of HPC, Programming languages such as C/C++, Fortran, Python, R, etc, parallel Programming in MPI and OpenMP, GPU computing, debugging and profiling, specific HPC application, and other topics relevant to use of HPC in Computational/Data Science and Engineering.
- Understand and convey current trends in research computing technology to the user community.
- Write user guides, information material and other documentation.

Professional Development (10%)
- Maintain familiarity with emerging techniques and technologies in research computing.
- Participate in training, education and development activities to improve knowledge and performance, and enhance professional development.
- Maintain familiarity with scientific visualization software and technologies.
- Participate in NSF Campus Champions, CaRCC and other organizations as appropriate.
- Establish partnerships external to NJIT (such as other Access centers) to support researchers that need to extend beyond local
computational capabilities.
- Attend and present at relevant academic and professional conferences and organizations.
- Perform other duties as assigned and as needed, including readiness to support after hours and weekends.

Prerequisite Qualifications:
- A Master's Degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience supporting the use of Research Computing resources at a research institution or national lab.
- 5+ years of experience using a HPC resource.
- Demonstrated experience learning new technologies.
- Demonstrated ability to act on tactical opportunities in an evolving, fast-paced environment, while continuing to build long term strategies.
- Demonstrated ability to multitask and work across multiple priorities.
- Demonstrated experience in organizing, developing and delivering training and workshops.
- Knowledge of Linux operating systems, including utilities and scripting languages.
- At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

Preferred Qualifications:
- A Doctoral degree in computational science or engineering, or a related field is preferred.
- Experience developing or mentoring teams to support or use HPC resources and services.
- Experience with writing grant proposals.
- Experience mentoring RCF's or graduate students in the use of HPC resources and services.
