College Physician

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Doctor of Medicine degree (or foreign equivalent) resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. Current licensure/registration, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in New York State. One (1) year of post-residency experience in primary care. Board Certified in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Pediatrics.

Preferred Qualifications:
Proficiency in spoken and written languages other than English (i.e. Spanish, Korean, Chinese or Mandarin). Prior laboratory experience. Experience with LGBTQ healthcare, including transgender health, PreP, PEP and hormonal replacement therapy. Supervisory experience.

Brief Description of Duties:
The College Physician carries out direct patient (student) care including examination and treatment of patients with acute and chronic health complaints who are registered undergraduate and graduate students of Stony Brook University. Provide treatment and education of college and graduate students in the clinic, ordering and interpreting laboratory tests, and arranging for follow-up treatment or making referrals in accordance with professional judgment. As such, this position requires extensive clinical skills in health assessment, diagnosis, treatment, counseling and referral and is also responsible for building rapport quickly, developing trust, sustaining working relationships with co-workers of Student Health, Wellness, & Prevention Services.

The successful incumbent will have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational and time-management skills with an exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving.

Clinical Responsibilities:
Deliver primary care, diagnose health issues, perform physical exams, obtain patient medical histories, vital signs and symptoms, chief complaints; order and analyze diagnostic tests, administer medications and vaccinations, prescribe treatment regimens including but not limited to pharmaceuticals, and evaluate responses to treatments and medications.

Detect changes in a patient's health and changes treatment plans as necessary.

The physician creates patient care plans, contributes to existing plans, and consults with healthcare professionals, as appropriate.

Collaborate with internal and external providers to provide quality care and improve transitions in care.

Work collaboratively with staff members within and outside the department to plan, implement, evaluate, and improve care delivery methods as well as to meet operational goals.

Work as a key member of the integrated wellness team.

Administrative Responsibilities:
Support the administrative operations of the Clinical Laboratory Department in SHS to include accuracy and efficiency in testing, efficient delivery of laboratory services, quality assurance and quality control, staff performance, and process improvement.

Policies and Procedures:
Review policies and procedures ensuring quality of care in accordance to accreditation and NYS guidelines.

Participate on various committees reviewing policies and procedures, formulary maintenance, and performance improvement. (i.e. Quality Improvement Committee).

Patient-Centered Care Projects:
Participate in special projects that relate to patient centered care such as strategic priorities and performance reporting related to the clinical EMR.

Assist the Medical Director and/or the Director of Operations with strategic priorities and performance reporting related to the clinical EMR.

Assist in being an expert superuser for the development of the Clinical EMR for provider documentation.

Collaborate with internal and external providers to provide quality care and improve transitions in care such as coordinating medical services with psychological counseling staff to work toward a holistic approach to student wellness.

Supervision:
Supervise residents, nurse practitioner students, and medical students.

Monitor the work of mid-level practitioners (nurse practitioner or physician assistant**) registered nurses, and medical assistants.

Contribute to in-service lectures for medical trainees and staff.

Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:
This is a part time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

Evening and weekend work will be required. The hours of this position are Saturday - Sunday 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and Wednesday - Friday 2:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. (hours are subject to change).

May also be required to provide the above services at either the HSC/East campus or the Southampton campus.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such are required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are cancelled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
