Part Time Animal Care Technician

Administer medications via different routs; mix medications in the proper concentrations; give continuous intravenous medications and titrate to blood pressure or heart rate to maintain at the proper level. Utilize proper sterile techniques in handling medications and intravenous solutions. Recognize changes in the proper function of computers and drive units; monitor information and take proper action to correct and notify appropriate support personnel as needed. Assist with the guidance and training of newly hired Animal Care Technicians. Recognize and evaluate changes in animals' physical conditions; take proper action, i.e. start oxygen, control bleeding, start IV's, etc. and call appreciate support personal. Restrain animals for blood samples, catheter insertion and other tests as needed. Set-up, prepare for surgery. Maintain detailed accurate records of animals, data, medications, intake and output daily. Understand and follow oral and written orders given by the PI's, Clinical Veterinarians, Research Support Specialist, Group Leader and the Facility Manager. Perform intensive care duties on a wide variety of animals with varying operations/complications and perform routine care on stable animals. Perform laboratory tests as directed i.e. blood gases, hematocrits, clot times, etc. React properly to and follow in house procedures for handling alarms and power failures. Maintain inventory records and inventory at the proper levels. Feed, water and care for animals in a humane fashion according to AALAS and the GUIDE. Assist in the transport and washing of animals. Maintain animal rooms and facility hallways in a clean state to avoid secondary infections or contamination by promptly and thoroughly removing animal waste, keeping the room and all equipment clean, removing trash daily and changing air filters regularly. Work closely with the Division of Artificial Organs in achieving both research and husbandry goals. Work with the animal husbandry group handling a variety of different species and equipment as required. Comply with Animal Facility, Applied Biomedical Engineering and Penn State Hershey policies and standard operating procedures. Attend technician meeting and training sessions on all aspects of laboratory animal care, research and uses of animals in biomedical research as assigned by the management staff. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. This position requires the knowledge and ability to learn to use various technical animal care equipment including, fluid pumps, handling needles and syringes. Requires the ability to perform a wide range of laboratory test and procedures and requires the ability to administered medications properly. This position requires proficient verbal and written English and mathematic skills pertinent to the duties of this position and situations encountered in the animal facility and operating room. Demonstrate proficiency for core SOP's and mathematical calculations and ability to perform conversions in order to prepare and administer the proper medications at the proper concentrations. Requires the ability to work independently and in a team setting. Customer focused attitude, self starter and enjoys working with other similarly dedicated persons is a must. Attend quarterly or as needed, training, review sessions and/or seminars. Requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds wiht or without accommodation, on a regular basis and requires long periods of standing. The animal facility has a variety of environmental conditions including exposure to noise, dust, chemical, heat and animal waste products. Some aspects of this position may expose the employee to potentially fatal zoonotic diseases. The use of appropriate protective clothing and equipment may be required and will be provided, when required, along with the proper training. Work requires a high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 1 year experience.
