Project Coordinator

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

Bachelor's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Two years of directly related, full time experience with research, lab, and/or large database management.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree or higher (foreign equivalent or higher) in quantitative ecology, fisheries, marine science/oceanography, applied statistics, or a related field. Demonstrated experience in research lab and data-base management, data analysis and statistical modeling, critical thinking, and report writing. Knowledge of webpage development and maintenance. Familiarity with data analysis and program coding (e.g., R) in quantitative fisheries ecology, population and community ecology, GLMs, GAMs, multivariate statistics analyses, and spatial statistics.

Brief Description of Duties:

The Project Coordinator will provide a broad range of complex laboratory and research related tasks. Working under general supervision in support of the Hudson River Biological Monitoring Program (HRBMP) for Dr.Yong Chen in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS), the incumbent will manage historical biological and environmental data and samples of the Hudson River Biological Monitoring Program (HRBMP) donated by Entergy to Stony Brook University, by providing scientific, technical, and logistical support to our endeavor of identifying the scientific potential of the Entergy's HRBMP biological and environmental data and samples.

The successful incumbent will have excellent interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational and time-management skills with an exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently in a leadership capacity, as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving. They will work effectively with a wide range of constituencies from people of different backgrounds, NGOs, faculty, administrators, resource managers, industry, as well as delivering presentations at scientific and public meetings

The Project Coordinator will:
  • Manage and maintain the HRBMP program database and samples. Develop and maintain a program webpage for hosting the program-related information (e.g., relevant data products, research papers, reports, and relevant activities).


  • Work collaboratively with other employees, faculty and professionals to advance the goals of the project. Work with the PI, Advisory Committee and key stakeholders to identify and develop scientific research, educational and outreach programs that use the HRBMP data and samples to improve our understanding of the Hudson River ecosystem dynamics and inform decision-making in the management of Hudson River ecosystem and marine resources.


  • Develop, monitor, coordinate and manage activities to maintain effective operation of the program. Coordinate future annual meetings of the stakeholders and be responsible for interim communications and public inquiries for the program.


  • Observe, collect and analyze data and write summary reports as necessary. Prepare briefing materials/reports with information on the issues and topics of the HRBMP data and samples and their relevance to policy or management/conservation issues that the Hudson River ecosystem has been confronting. Contribute to report and proposal writing. Present at scientific meetings.


  • Other duties as assigned.


Supervisory responsibilities:
  • Incumbent may be responsible for orienting/training others to the project/program and checking work of less experienced employees as assigned.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
