Position Focus:
Carry out research assignments for a large or multi-faceted research project. Responsible for data analysis, visualization, and organization for research projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in remote sensing, data analysis, and field work in tropical environments.

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI), will be responsible for gathering, managing, and analyzing datasets at the Ecology and Conservation Science of Tropical Ecosystems Lab (ECOSTRESS) at the Yale School of the Environment (YSE). The focus of the research will be related to causes and consequences of deforestation and forest degradation in the tropics. The ECOSTRESS lab has three main research areas: identifying ecological thresholds beyond which global changes cause abrupt, prolonged degradation of terrestrial ecosystems by stressing, disturbing, and killing forests; quantifying ecological and climatological boundaries for tropical agricultural expansion and intensification; and finding nature-based solutions to feed the planet while maintaining the ecological integrity of terrestrial natural ecosystems.

This position will focus on daily operational management and oversight of the personnel and data analysis for these research areas. Actively participate in the design and development of experiments and responsible for all regulatory aspects of the group's scientific activities. Collaborate with the PI, postdocs, and students to develop long-range plans for field trips to ensure smooth operation of data collection. Participates in experimental design set up and oversees data collection and management. Oversees database management, method development, and quality control. Performs data analysis and presents data needed for reports, publications, and presentations. Maintains and operates computing resources, providing training, maintenance and troubleshooting problems with equipment for the group members. Stay abreast of current technology in the field to ensure the lab is operating with the most current technology. Some travel required, both domestic and international.

Assist with the design, planning, and execution of research projects, with a focus on remote sensing and possibly field work in the tropics. Collect, process, and analyze environmental data using remote sensing techniques and/or eddy covariance methods. Collaborate with research team on data analysis, interpretation, and presentation of findings. Participate in field work, including data collection and field measurements. Contribute to the preparation of research reports, publications, and presentations. Maintain accurate and up-to-date research records and databases.

Essential Duties:
1. Recommends the design and implementation of procedures and protocols under the direction of a higher-level authority. 2. Investigates, analyzes, and reaches preliminary scientific conclusions related to research planning 3. Ensures data results are compiled, analyzed, and presented properly. 4. Analyzes, develops and interprets scientific results. Maintains clear documentation of results. Prepares scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports. 5. Performs independent research and laboratory techniques and participates in experimental research planning. 6. Interacts with internal contacts including the PI, research assistants, graduate students, Radiation Safety and Biological Safety officers, and Animal Care personnel to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory. 7. Interacts with external contacts such as researchers at other institutions, staff at biotechnology and reagents companies to consult on research methods and to keep abreast of product information and developments. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
Master's Degree in a scientific discipline and one year experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Willingness to travel and work in tropical regions.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Bachelor's and/or MSc degree in Environmental Science, Geography, Forestry, Ecology, Biology, or related field. Basic Portuguese or Spanish. Strong analytical skills. Strong background in remote sensing and data analysis. Some experience with scientific programing. Familiarity with Google Earth Engine.
